Taking the subway in China is highly efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate, with bilingual signs (Chinese and English) and frequent trains. The quickest way to ride is by using your smartphone to generate a transit QR code on apps like Alipay or WeChat.
Navigating the system involves a few simple, standardized steps:
Plan Your Route
Apps: Download the Metroman app for detailed route planning, real-time updates, and fare calculations across various cities. You can also use AMap (Gaode Map) or Baidu Maps.
Look for the blue “M” logo or the character “地铁” (dìtiě) to locate station entrances.
Pay for Your Ride
Mobile Payment (Recommended): Open Alipay or WeChat, tap the “Transport/Ride” section, and follow the prompts to generate a local travel QR code. Scan this code at the turnstile to enter and exit. Tip: Set this up before you arrive and ensure your international credit card is linked.
Ticket Vending Machines: If you prefer a physical ticket, locate the machines in the station concourse. Switch the display to English, select your destination station, and pay using cash, WeChat, Alipay, or sometimes a foreign credit card.
Physical Transit Cards: If you are staying longer, you can buy a rechargeable transit card (e.g., Shanghai Public Transportation Card, Beijing Yikatong) at the customer service counter.
Go Through Security
- Before heading to the platforms, all bags must go through an X-ray scanner.
- Empty your pockets of metal objects, carry your phone through the metal detector, and be ready to place bags on the belt.
Board the Train
- Scan your mobile QR code or tap your ticket on the top of the turnstile to enter.
- Find your line number and the direction you want to travel. Stations have clear color-coded signs and platform markers indicating which way the train is heading.
- Wait for passengers to exit the train before stepping inside.
Exit the Station
- Follow the signs to your specific Exit (e.g., Exit A, B, C, etc.). Exits are usually mapped out with local street references.
- If you used a mobile QR code or tapped in with a transit card, scan it again at the exit gate.
- If you bought a single-use plastic token, insert it into the coin slot on the exit turnstile to leave.
